Residential Surveys
Topographic Survey for Building and Site Design
Maps slopes, grades and features of the land for design and drainage.
What is a topographic survey?
A topographic survey maps the shape of the land: the high and low spots, slopes and contour lines, plus features like trees, buildings, driveways, utilities and drainage paths.
Architects, engineers, builders and cities use it to design a project, plan grading and drainage, and review permits.
When you need one
- You're designing a new house, addition or commercial building
- Your engineer or architect asked for a "topo"
- You have drainage or standing-water problems to solve
- You're planning grading, a retaining wall, pool or driveway
- The city requires existing-conditions information for a site plan or permit
What to expect
- 01Send the address and what the survey is for. If an engineer or architect asked for it, share their requirements.
- 02A licensed surveyor in our network confirms the area to map, the level of detail and the price.
- 03The surveyor collects elevations and features on site, sometimes with drone or GPS equipment for larger areas.
- 04You receive a signed topographic map, and usually a CAD file your designer can work from.

Topographic Survey questions
Does a topographic survey show property lines?
Not always. Many projects need both, so surveyors often combine a boundary survey and a topographic survey. Tell the surveyor what the survey is for and they'll recommend the right combination.
What file formats will I get?
Usually a signed PDF and a CAD file (like DWG) for your architect or engineer. Ask for the format your designer needs when you request the quote.
